Full-time Medical Studies

Full-time Medical Studies

!! A level of at least B2 French is required to pursue medical studies in France. !!

Medical students wishing to take up or continue studies in medicine in France have two ways of accessing this program: the PASS (Parcours d'accès spécifique santé) or the LAS (Licence "accès santé").

The PASS is a one-year course for those who have decided to pursue studies in medicine and its affiliated fields. Two semesters are completed by students who will choose one medical major and a non-health related minor (e.g. economy, history, etc.)., after which a rigorous selection based on academic performance will determine a candidate's entry into the second year of MPOM (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, & Obstetrics).

The LAS, on the other hand, is an option for students who are considering pursuing medicine but are uncertain. The LAS allows the taking of a minor in a medical field and a major in a different area of study. Students under the LAS could complete their 10 ECTS units in their health minor in order to qualify for selection into MPOM. This application can be done at any moment during the 3 years of the licence so long as the 10 health units have been achieved.

For more information on the PASS and the LAS, consult this article on the website of the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research.

Medical Specialization

Medical Specialization

Foreign doctors and pharmacists from outside the European Union can enroll in a DFMS (Diplôme de formation médicale spécialisée) or DFMSA (Diplôme de formation médicale spécialisée approfondie) if they either have a diploma authorizing them to practice medicine in their country of origin or if they are currently undergoing specialized training. Courses are chosen from those of the Diplôme d’Études Spécialisées (DES) or the Diplôme d’Études Spécialisées Complémentaires (DESC), depending on the desired specialized training.

The duration of training for the DFMS or DFMSA cannot be less than one semester nor exceed two semesters. The DFMS and DFMSA do not grant authorization to practice medicine in France.

For more information, consult the official bulletin here (only available in French).

Admission Into University: Undergraduate

Admission Into University: Undergraduate

Universities in France offer the licence at the undergraduate level. Admission into the first year of the licence, or the L1 (with the 3rd and last year of the undergrad program called the L3) is done by submission of a dossier blanc or "white file". One of the requirements of the dossier blanc is at least B2 level proficiency in French as undergraduate courses outside of exchange semesters are taught either entirely or partially in French.

The dossier blanc must be submitted to the French Embassy's cultural department between October and mid-December prior to the academic year, with confirmed admissions being communicated at around May.

For more information on the dossier blanc, visit this article.

Application: Doctorate

Application: Doctorate

The doctorate program in France is unique in that aspiring Ph.D. holders must seek out a thesis topic and a corresponding thesis supervisor with whom they will discuss their induction into an existing research team. Only then could they begin their research toward the compiling of a doctorate thesis.

Consult these articles on the Campus France website about How to enroll in a doctorate program and What is involved in a doctorate in France.

You may also begin your search for research topics on the Campus France doctorate search engine.
