"My Master's experience was a meaningful and memorable journey." - Gaia
Gaia Javier (2018 PhilFrance Scholarship awardee and recipient of a Schneider Electric grant) graduates as valedictorian of her Master’s program, félicitations !
Remember when Gaia said that, “studying in France, ‘ça en vaut la peine’ (it’s worth it)” ?
After all the challenges and hard work, Gaia had the highest GPA and finished at the top of her Master’s program (Master of Science and Technology in Energy Environment) at the prestigious École Polytechnique in Palaiseau. She is the first Filipino to receive this distinction.
A humbling experience
During their online graduation in March 2021, Gaia shared these words:
Good afternoon. I am extremely grateful to be given the chance to speak in front of everyone today.
To Ecole Polytechnique, professors, administrative staff, scholarship providers, classmates, friends, family, and all other people who have been part of my Master’s experience, thank you for making this a meaningful and memorable journey. It has been a humbling experience realizing how little I knew. At the same time, it has been empowering because I also realized how much more I can help the world.
To my fellow graduates, be proud and raise your heads because we did it. Despite all the hardships we faced, and we would face in the future, know that it’s okay to rest, we can take our time, walk at our own pace, and we will continue to move forward.
And to everyone, I hope we continue to do what we love, to advance science, and to pursue innovations in service of others.
Kudos to all of us! Félicitations à nous tous ! Mabuhay tayong lahat!
Advice to fellow Filipinos
We asked Gaia if she has any advice to share with Filipinos who would like to study in France, here’s what she said:
I’d like to say five things:
- Pursue what you love;
- Dare to explore – there is comfort outside your comfort zone;
- However far you’ve reached, stay connected;
- Be a person for others;
- Have fun!
Congratulations, Gaia ! We are proud of your achievements and happy to have been part of your journey!
